Exporter for SQL Server Instance |
|
On a given server you can run multiple SQL server services , each with their own logins and databases. Each of these services is called an "instance" of SQL Server. When you install ACT! 2005-2008 on your system, it installs an instance named ACT7. This instance is password protected by Sage and it cannot be accessed without purchasing a password from Sage.
However, you can make a copy of your ACT! database and use another SQL instance to access it.
Our SQL installer will determine the SQL version you need -- MSDE or SQL Express and install it for you. You can installed the Exporter instance on any system. It does not require ACT! to be installed. If you are doing this, we recommend that you install it on a system with .NET 2.0. This way it will install SQL Express instead of MSDE. Using SQL Express you can access ACT! versions 2005-2008 databases. With MSDE, you can only access ACT! 2005-2006 databases.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to installing and using an Exporter SQL instance.
| Advantages: Access to more data -- including activities, group relationships, secondary contacts etc. Does not require that ACT! is installed on the system. You can use Microsoft's Studio Express to manage the database. |
Disadvantages: The download is 100 MB. Installing SQL can be complex. Will only work on a copy of the database. Can not run in automatic mode. |
