Too many fields in this table to export

Unfortunately, the designers of ACT! did not adhere to the industry standard size for dBase tables.  Because we use Microsoft software for the Exporter, we must.  We have made special allowances for the contact table to allow 500 fields but the group table is restricted to 250.

First you need to find out how many fields you have in your tables.  You can do this by using ACTDIAG -- a utility which comes with ACT!

1.  At the Run command enter ACTDIAG.

2.  Select Database Fields report from the Reports menu dropdown.

There will be a FIELD COUNT line for each table.  This will help you determine how many fields you need to delete.

If you are exporting to convert to a new package, you should also check with your new vendor to see how many fields you can have in the contact and/or group table.  Most have restrictions, usually around 200.

3.  If you decide to delete fields, you can follow the instructions in the ACT! User Guide.

4.  It's always a good idea to reindex and compress the database after doing this  Select File>Administration>Database Maintenance. Make sure the Compress Database box is checked and then click the Reindex... button..
